Accepted Answer

The test contains 33 multiple-choice questions. Each question has four answer options, and only one is correct.

Accepted Answer

Yes. 30 questions are the same across Germany, and 3 questions are specific to the federal state (Bundesland) where you live.

Question 4

How much time do I have for the test?

Accepted Answer

You have 60 minutes to complete the test.

Question 5

What do I need to bring to the test — and what is not allowed?

Accepted Answer

You must bring an official photo ID (passport, national ID, residence permit) and a blue or black pen. You may NOT bring mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, headphones, notes, or electronic aids. Bags and jackets cannot be on the table. The test center will give you instructions before the exam, and sometimes these instructions are also sent by email. You must follow all instructions carefully, or you may be excluded from the test.

Question 6

What is the passing score?

Accepted Answer

For an Integration Course certificate, usually 15 correct answers are enough. For citizenship recognition, typically at least 17 correct answers are required.

Question 7

What happens if I cheat?

Accepted Answer

If you cheat or use forbidden items, you will be removed from the exam and your test will not be evaluated.

Question 8

Can I repeat the test if I fail?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can repeat the test as many times as you need, but you must register again and pay the fee each time.

Question 9

How is the test conducted?

Accepted Answer

You show your ID, receive the test paper, and complete the questions on your own without help. At the end, you must sign and date the front page and hand it back to the exam staff.

Question 10

When is the test required?

Accepted Answer

The test is required for citizenship (Einbürgerung) and for permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis). It proves knowledge of Germany's legal system, society, and history.

Question 11

Do I need German language skills for this test?

Accepted Answer

You do not need advanced German. The test uses simple language, and many people pass with basic German understanding if they prepare well. Historically, people took a language course and an integration course before the test, but the test itself is not linguistically difficult.

Question 12

How should I prepare for the test?

Accepted Answer

Study the official catalog of 310 questions. Go through the entire catalog at least twice, and take at least 5 mock exams or continue until you consistently score around 30 correct answers out of 33. Focus on questions you get wrong and repeat them until you remember them.
